Silvio Berlusconi and the broader moderate alliance

Wednesday, December 12, 2012. Silvio Berlusconi makes a U-turn and declares willingness to back Mario Monti in case of the creation of a broader moderate alliance to beat Italian left-wingers.

Mario Monti, the guy Berlusconi a few days ago dubbed as “beholden to Germany”, acting as a quasi-accomplice of Angela Merkel to try to "topple a majority government elected by the Italians” by using a scam (the spread-scam), leading a government that brought Italy to “the brink of the abyss” is now the favourite candidate of the Italian media tycoon? Can you believe that? Berlusconi is forcing Mario Monti to resign in order to vote for Monti as a Prime Minister?

Berlusconi thinking hard
Yet another brainwave? Or just going nuts?
Italian former Prime Minister took the occasion of a public event – the televised presentation of start TV anchorman Bruno Vespa's latest book – to inform the public of the last of his U-turn. Mr Berlusconi said the he "proposed to Monti to be the candidate as leader for the moderate centre coalition and he said he didn't want to. If his position changes, I would have no problem with stepping back ... I have no personal ambitions".
Previously Silvio said he would step back for the sake of Italians, “enter the field” in order to seek a new term the for sake of Italians, and now he is ready to withdraw his bid, most probably for the sake of Italians. He resigned, in November 2011, for the sake of Italians

A sceptical Mario Monti wondering...
Berlusconi's rival (and former ally), centrist UDC party's leader Pier Ferdinando Casini  declared "Berlusconi is obviously in a confused state if he is suggesting to make yet another U-turn in case Monti runs".

Now, Mr Casini (FYI the word “casini” informally means “shambles” in Italian, whilst formally means “brothels”) would like Monti to be an ally – and candidate – to former splinter of Christian Democrats UDC, in which case Luca Cordero di Montezemolo (Ferrari boss and former head of Confindustria, the Italian employers' association) might also “enter the field”, and leave Berlusconi with his ally Lega Nord (Northern League), but possibly without a part of PdL, which could disintegrate because former Alleanza Nazionale members (National Alliance, a former party, originated in the former neo-fascist party MSI, led by former ally to Berlusconi, Mr Fini, who in the mean time made friends with Cordero di Montezemolo), among them two women, Daniela SantanchĂ© and Alessandra Mussolini, might split. Get it? Whatever.

Mr Berlusconi should be careful with them U-turns, or sooner or later a lorry could run into him, and he won't see it coming.

Luckily enough his trial related to the sex-scandal – the so called Rubygate – is slowing down, due to missing witnesses...
